Grandpa got his MRI yesterday to see how his seeding treatment worked for his liver cancer, and it appears that the big tumor has been completely dissolved! I am so over the moon for him, I just cannot tell you how happy I am that he is on the road to recovery.
He was so delighted when the Dr. sat down with him with the results. There is still one stubborn tumor that seems to want to stay on his liver, so he will need to go in for chemo on that one overnight in the next week. I will get some more info this weekend since we are going to be celebrating. This tumor that went away was the size of a baseball. We were told sooo many different things regarding this tumor such as what type of treatment to get on it, and how long he had to live with it.. so to hear it is gone is just incredible. We were told it was inoperable, then it was operable, then it wasn't because it was on the inside of the liver to it being on the outside..too many Dr.s looking at the mri and making opinions was making us go stir crazy..I could not even begin to imagine what my fil has been through. He had to go to Portland to see a specialist who devised the grand plan to shoot it with a seeding bullet..for those that aren't familiar with it, it is a bullet of radioactive metal fragments that gets placed in the middle of the tumor that works by attacking the cancer. The fragments will remain with him for life, but the radioactive parts of them only last a short time. We have a joke that he will have a heck of a time explaning making the metal detectors go off..You have to have a sense of humor on this kind of stuff!
So...next step is the yucky chemo. The Dr. seemed to be very confident that all that he would need is a one shot chemo treatment to get rid of it and then he will come back a couple of weeks later to have another mri to make sure it is gone, and if so..he will have check ups every 4 months to be sure that it has not returned. Imagine how thrilled we all are! We are almost there!
